The metaphor of the head as heaven and the gut as hell draws from ancient spiritual and philosophical traditions, where the head, seat of intellect, vision, and higher consciousness, is associated with the celestial or divine, while the gut, center of primal instincts and digestion, is linked to the earthly or infernal realms.
This symbolism is echoed in various mystical teachings, where the head is seen as the locus of enlightenment and the gut as a place of base desires or suffering.
This duality is not just spiritual but psychological. The "heaven and hell inside your head" concept suggests that our mental state can create experiences of bliss or torment, depending on our thoughts and perceptions.
In religious thought, heaven represents harmony, connection, and ultimate fulfillment, while hell is estrangement, alienation, and suffering.
Similarly, the head can symbolize clarity and higher purpose, while the gut can represent turmoil or unresolved emotion.
Modern neuroscience provides a fascinating parallel through the gut, brain axis, a complex, bidirectional communication system between the central nervous system (the brain in the head) and the enteric nervous system (the "second brain" in the gut).
This axis regulates mood, stress, and even cognitive function. When the gut is healthy, signals to the brain promote calm and clarity (a "heavenly" state).
When the gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can send distress signals, contributing to anxiety, depression, or emotional unrest (a "hellish" experience).
The head as heaven represents the potential for higher thought, vision, and peace, a state of connection with purpose and meaning.
The gut as hell represents the seat of unresolved emotion, instinct, and suffering, a state that can drag consciousness into turmoil if neglected.
The gut, brain axis is the bridge, showing that these realms are not separate but deeply interconnected. Our physical state (gut health) can elevate or disturb our mental and spiritual state (head), and vice versa.
Understanding this connection invites a holistic approach to well-being, mindful practices (meditation, conscious breathing) can harmonize the head and gut, fostering both clarity and calm.
Nourishing the gut with low fat, healthy, high fiber starchy carbs and managing stress supports not just physical health but also emotional and spiritual balance by dramatically altering microbiome within hours.
The ancient metaphor of the head as heaven and the gut as hell finds new relevance in the science of the gut, brain axis.
It reminds us that our highest and lowest states are not fixed places but dynamic, interconnected experiences, each influencing the other in the ongoing ritual of being human.
The ancient archetypal axis mundi or cosmic axis, represents this polarity of the ardous stairway to heaven, or the tempting highway to hell.
In the great polarity of existence, the body becomes a living metaphor, the head, seat of thought and spirit, aligns with heaven, clear, light, and alkaline.
The gut, center of digestion and desire, mirrors hell, dense, fermenting, and acidic.
Just as the pH scale measures the balance between acidity and alkalinity, a spectrum where low pH denotes acidity and high pH signals alkalinity, so too does our diet and consciousness oscillate between these poles.
To nourish the soul and ascend toward the heavens, one turns to alkaline foods, plants, which draw their energy directly from the sun, embodying light, clarity, and the upward movement of life.
In consuming these, we align with the principle of direct Light of God, raising our internal state toward God, the good, the true and the Beautiful.
Conversely, when we consume animals, beings who themselves have consumed the Light of God, we take in not the direct energy of the Light of God, but a step removed, filtered through the density of flesh and the suffering of torment, and slaughter.
This process, laden with carcinogenic caustic waste metabolites, draws us downward into the dysbiosis of decay and disease, the realm of fermentation, heaviness, and the metaphorical hell.
Here, acidity prevails, mirroring the spiritual descent into confusion, carnal desire, and disconnection from the source.
Thus, the polarity of alkalinity and acidity within the body becomes a living correspondence to the polarity of heaven and hell, to eat of the sun through plants is to ascend, to eat of the beasts is to descend.
The choice is ever-present, within our bodies and within our souls, between the clarity of the head and the heaviness of the gut, between the light of heaven and the shadow of hell.
Hollywood, in its storytelling, amplifies this ancient metaphor.
The visual language of cinema often uses appetite and consumption to signal the moral and spiritual state of its characters.
The grotesque feasts of villains, tables overflowing with roasted flesh, dripping fat, and excess, serve as a shorthand for gluttony, corruption, and descent into a personal hell.
The fat, sweaty, debauched antagonists are depicted gorging on meat and wine, their bodies and appetites embodying the acidic, fermenting chaos of the gut, hell within the body, where unchecked desire and decay reign.
These portrayals are not accidental. They reinforce the age-old association of overconsumption, especially of animal flesh, with moral and spiritual downfall.
The evil cabals and corrupt elites in film are frequently shown as slaves to their appetites, their feasts a ritual of separation from the light, a descent into the fermenting, acidic depths of the body and soul.
This is the visual antithesis of the stoic, plant-based sage, the Pythagorean order, for example, is often referenced as a model of purity and spiritual discipline, their diet of plants a direct channel to the sun’s energy and the clarity of the head, heaven within.

Today, we're diving deep into the findings of the Select Committee on the Coronavirus Pandemic report, a moderately comprehensive document that sheds light on the origins, missteps, and long-term implications of the pandemic response. While we find much to discuss—and critique—within its pages, this report is another crucial entry into the growing library of work highlighting the urgent need for accountability and reform.
Together, we'll explore its insights and use them to advocate for a future where overreach, mismanagement, and infringements on our fundamental rights are not tolerated. This conversation is vital to ensuring that the lessons of the past guide us toward a more just and resilient tomorrow.

No matter how bad you think Covid policies were, they were intended to be worse.
Consider the vaccine passports alone. Six cities were locked down to include only the vaccinated in public indoor places. They were New York City, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Seattle. The plan was to enforce this with a vaccine passport. It broke. Once the news leaked that the shot didn’t stop infection or transmission, the planners lost public support and the scheme collapsed.
It was undoubtedly planned to be permanent and nationwide if not worldwide. Instead, the scheme had to be dialed back.
Features of the CDC’s edicts did incredible damage. It imposed the rent moratorium. It decreed the ridiculous “six feet of distance” and mask mandates. It forced Plexiglas as the interface for commercial transactions. It implied that mail-in balloting must be the norm, which probably flipped the election. It delayed the reopening as long as possible. It was sadistic.
Even with all that, worse was planned. On July 26, 2020, with the ...

I appreciate the non-partisan approach the Subcommittee is taking today. Clearly, science in the last few years, but especially on topics related to the COVID pandemic, has been coopted by geopolitics. Thus, I am here, not as a mouthpiece for any political party, but as an American scientist.
I dedicate my testimony today to the more ...
