Measurement, in the ancient world, was not a secondary act performed upon an already existing reality. It was the act by which reality itself came into being. To measure was to impose limit, to establish proportion, and to convert chaos into a cosmos. Order was not created through force but through ratio. What could be measured could be stabilized. What could be stabilized could endure.
